Burg Eltz

We really enjoyed the nice sunny weather last weekend that we even went to see an old castle in the next State. I am not so sure if the drive took 90 minutes or 2 hours because Eyna and I were busy laughing and talking in the car.
Castle Eltz (Burg Eltz) surprised me, it was not the usual on top of the hill sort of castle that I have seen a lot of times around Germany. This one was almost hidden in the mountains, it takes a few meters (or kilometers?) by foot to reach it. It is surrounded by a river, mountains and trails and there is actually a shuttle(with matching €€) for those challenged by the hike. Actually going down is fun but going up was rather more challenging. Our "flight of stairs experience" in the Opera House was nothing compared to this one. This castle is celebrating this year its 850 years jubilee. That's a lot of hundred years we thought this was probably due to the location of this castle. Who would have taken much interest on this one, going throughout the mountains and steep hills and slopes when they can just attack those along the Rhine River? Pretty good defense system right? Unfortunately you cannot roam on your own the castle. There's a guide that gives a tour every 15 minutes, I think that was about 45-60 minutes tour of the supposed to be 100 plus rooms castle (of course we didn't see all of it). What we saw were impressive enough. The guide looked so stressed and tensed that we would ask her some intelligent questions that she tried to discourage anybody from asking questions with her automated machine like sound - "do you have any questions? (inhale -) no, then let's proceed to the next room (exhaling - thank God!) .
Too bad, we were not allowed to take pictures so just click on the link if you want to see more what it looks inside. I took some pictures just before we got in. This castle is worth a visit. Sorry I cannot just show you how beautiful it is, especially inside.

Makes me want to go back. Last time I was in Germany I was 13 on a schools exchange trip! Still have an album of photos somewhere. Maybe I should find them and scan some in!
